Jewish leaders have protested the deletion of "Jerusalem, capital of Israel" from the Democratic Party’s platform. In private conversations, they commented that President Barack Obama, who has avoided visiting Israel, will further alienate the Jewish voter by this surprising new step.
Republicans say that dropping Jerusalem means that the Democrats no longer back Israel. The latter responds that the fate of Jerusalem will be determined in final-status Israel-Palestinian negotiations and need not be addressed now.
