Anders Behring Breivik, the right-wing fanatic who admitted to killing 77 people in Norway last year, had plotted to assassinate US President Barack Obama, Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet reported Sunday.

Speaking to police, Breivik said that in 2009 he planned on packing a car with explosives and driving it onto the square next to Oslo City Hall, detonating it during the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony taking place there attended by the US president.

Breivik said that he decided against the plot only because of its implausibility, maintaining that it would have been a perfect way to promote his anti-Islamic message, according to Dagbladet.

Last July, Breivik carried out a bomb attack at the government headquarters in Oslo, killing eight. Later that day, dressed in police uniform, Breivik opened fire at a youth camp affiliated with Norway's ruling political party, killing 69. He has formally been charged with terrorism and premeditated murder.

Breivik's trial is set to begin on April 16. The maximum sentence in Norway is 21 years in prison with the proviso that custody can be extended if the offender is considered a risk to repeat his crimes.
